Lambeth Mutual Aid: Find out more about our January café, the Solidarity Fund reopening, and where to get free hot meals during the holidays -
In and around Lambeth: NYE Prisoner Solidarity Demo, news from Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth, and Lambeth Libraries As always, please donate to the Solidarity Fund and share the link around. We have many, many people applying for grants, and we want to pay them out as soon as possible! | | | | Free and affordable food this Christmas break We've made a list of places to find free hot meals in Lambeth and Southwark between today and January 1. A lot of charities and other groups who support people will be closed during this week, and we know it's harder to get information and help. We will be checking our emails less than usual, but we know this is a tough time of year for a lot of people, so do reach out to us if you need someone and we will respond as soon as we can. | | | | Solidarity Fund reopens in January We will reopen the Solidarity Fund on Wednesday 7 January. The form will remain open for one week, and if you need help with filling the form in, we will have computers with us at the cafe on Sunday 11 January so we can support you. Everyone who applies is placed in a queue: please do not apply more than once, and please do not apply if you are aged under 16! | | | | A new café in January! For our next community cafe on Sunday 11 January we have a new venue: Brockwell Park Community Greenhouse. This is a bigger room where more people can sit and eat – and it has a much bigger kitchen, so more people can cook! Also changing is the time of the cafe: we will open at 12:30 and finish at 15:30. This cafe is in the same park where we met in August for our picnic. You can get directions to the cafe here: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/?api=1&destination=51.450342,-0.10858 or by searching: Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses in a maps app on a phone. Everything else will stay the same! All the food is free! We can pay your bus fare, we welcome children and the room is accessible to wheelchairs. We will have lots of personal items that you can take away, as well as some clothes, and other bits and pieces. If you want to help with the cooking, please let us know in advance! We almost never have enough people for cleaning both during the meal and at the end, so if you can stay until 3.30pm to help with that, that would be wonderful! Thank you to Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses for kindly giving us access to their space, we're looking forward to a great Sunday afternoon. | | | | In and around Lambeth New Years Eve Brixton Prison Noise Demo!! Every year, people from everywhere on the planet hold noisy demonstrations outside prisons on New Year's Eve. We do this to show all of those who're locked inside that they're not forgotten, and to demonstrate our commitment to a world without violence and punishment, to a world without prisons. No Justice No Peace. In honour of this tradition, we invite you all to Join us outside HMP Brixton, on Tuesday 31st December from 6pm. This year the escalation against the Zionist entity has continued to erupt - the British Prison Estate now another front line of this struggle. The largest co-ordinated hunger strike in British Prisons in recent history is directly threatening the lives of a number of our comrades. We send our love to the strikers, currently being held on remand and facing trail after being linked to actions which cost Elbit Systems millions in damages. Bring drums and speakers, your pots and pans to bash with a spoon, your musical instruments and most importantly, your friends! Come and make some noise with us before heading on to your NYE plans. Let's bring in this new year with solidarity and much more justice. ********************************************************************************* HASL (Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth) reopening to help with housing problems HASL are a group of people in temporary accommodation and housing distress who help each other fight against council tactics such as: threats of eviction, unannounced visits, threats of movement to Dover and forcing people to move on to private rented accommodation. (image credit: bigsurbooks on Instagram) | | Lambeth Mutual Aid has been working together for five years! And the collective keeps growing, because mutual aid is needed more than ever. If you're interested in what we do, don't be shy: get involved. We work anti-hierarchically (we don't tell each another what to do) and there are always jobs to do, from cooking and cleaning at the cafe to handing out flyers. This isn't a volunteer service, we don't give out jobs: you bring your time, energy, enthusiasm and we make things happen together. So if you'd love to meet new people, build different community values and make Lambeth a more fair and supportive place to live, send us a message on social media or by email! | | | | That's all for now.
